Long time listeners to Big Texas Blues may recognize Mrs. Amanda, my niece and sometimes co-host, in the picture above. Many of you have seen her over the years at my live Thanksgiving Broadcast and other assorted KNON benefits.

Amanda gave birth Wednesday morning, January 4th, to her first child, a daughter, Lillian Belle Judd, at 11:36 a.m., 7 lbs, 15 oz., 19 inches, the lovely little lady in these pictures.

And yes, my little Lilly Belle is already a blues fan, and has her very own Lou Ann Barton onesie to prove it, made, of course, by her GrandLala Blue Lisa.

Mother, daughter and already sleep deprived new daddy Ian are all doing fine.

Mick Jagger And Keith Richards Pay For Hubert Sumlin Funeral

The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will pay for the funeral of blues great Hubert Sumlin.

According to a post from Sumlin’s partner Toni Ann, “I just wanted to share with you, Hubert’s loving fans, that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have insisted on picking up the full expenses for Hubert’s funeral. God Bless the Rolling Stones”.

Hubert Sumlin died on December 4 at the age of 80. Sumlin was one of the last great Chicago blues artists. He was the guitarist for Howlin’ Wolf. Keith Richards played on Sumlin’s 2006 album THEM SHOES.

A private service was held in Homewood, Illinois on December 13. A public service for fans was held on December 12 in Totowa, New Jersey.

Mick Jagger said, “Hubert was an incisive yet delicate blues player. He had a really distinctive and original tone and was a wonderful foil for Howlin’ Wolf’s growling vocal style. On a song like “Goin’ Down Slow” he could produce heart-rending emotion, and on a piece like “Wang Dang Doodle” an almost playful femininity. He was an inspiration to us all.”

I hear jinglebells: Freddie King's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Per this morning'sheads-up from Cleveland, the Gilmer-born guitarist, singer and songwriter isthis year's entry in the Early Influence category; damn right. Hisnewly penned Hall bio lists the myriad reasons -- for starters, "His'60s classics, 'Have You Ever Loved A Woman,' 'Hide Away,' 'You've Got To LoveHer With A Feeling' and 'The Stumble' are part of the DNA of modern electricblues" -- and, as noted before, he's the man who walked the guitar fromT-Bone Walker to Stevie and Jimmie Vaughan. He brought the blues into thefuture. Just ask Eric Clapton.

That March 31, 1975, KZEW performance to which I linked in the summer of 2010is gone, but not gone; it's just over here now, a vibrant, visceral blast of blues straightout of January Sound Studio with a set list that could have been carved on astone tablet ("Big Legged Woman," "Have You Ever Loved aWoman," "Woman Across the River," "Hide Away,""Come On (Part III)"). I listen to it several times a week; it's astimeless as The Texas Cannonball, who's now, at long last, enshrined andimmortalized amongst giants who built their careers on his echoes.

Another essential King recording: Live at The Electric Ballroom, said to contain theonly known acoustic King performances. First issued by Black Top Records in'95, you can also hear King talk about his life and music with the great JonDillon, a discovery from The Wayback Machine. In that album's liner notes,Freddie's daughter Wanda -- who, as I wrote back in '98, has spent decades fiercelyprotecting her father's music and legacy -- notes his influences, among themPorter Wagoner. "He just loved music. It didn't matter if it was blues,R&B, opera, pop or gospel," she wrote. "He gave blues a moderntwist."

Come December 28, King will have been dead exactly 35 years: The stress ofnonstop touring, and all that accompanies the lifestyle, devoured the great manat the young age of 42; he died of bleeding ulcers and pancreatitis atPresbyterian Hospital. He's buried at Sparkman/Hillcrest on Northwest Highway.Stop by when you have the chance. Congratulate him. He's in the Rock and RollHall of Fame.

Born August 11, 1968 in San Antonio, moved to Austin at age 4. He and younger brother Will were taught to play guitar by the Godfather of Austin Blues, W.C. Clark. Along with Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon in 1992 formed the undeniably cool could-only-come-out-of-Texas-kick-ass Arc Angels, after the passing of friend and mentor Stevie Ray Vaughan. Currently part of Bob Dylan's band. Happy Birthday to the incredibly versatile CHARLIE SEXTON!! CERTAINLY you already own the Arc Angels CD's, but you should really be good to yourself and check out Charlie's solo 2005 release "Cruel and Gentle Things". The songs on that CD will get inside your heart, head and soul and will both comfort and haunt you all of your remaining days. Kudos to you, Charlie. Can't wait to see where your musical life leads you next!

Another blues-stringer back home

I must be the only person in Dallas who didn't know him personally (or maybe just one of the few honest enough to admit it.) Still, I had known and loved his music when I was a rocker, and after his death, when I read the books written about him, it was he who led me to Lou Ann Barton. That was how I entered this wonderful world of Blues. Thanks Stevie.

Strangely enough, the night of the 10th Anniversary, I was at one of Lou Ann's shows. Although I have been very lucky to have had many, many conversations with Lou Ann, she never mentioned Stevie's death - too painful, too personal I would imagine. But that night, on stage, she told us it had been 10 years ago that evening and how much she still missed him. Then she, Derek O'Brien and the rest of the band jumped into a tribute of sorts of the songs she and Stevie had done together. A beautiful, touching moment.

His Mom never liked people talking much about the anniversary - I think she thought it celebrated his death instead of his life. Even so, 20 years (20 years!! Can it really be 20 years?) is a milestone and I did talk about it briefly, respectfully on my show yesterday and played 4 of his songs, because of course, those songs are his legacy, and keep him alive in our hearts.

Buddy Whittington was my guest in the studio. He came in to talk about his new CD "A Bag Full Of Blues" (gotta check out the awesome "Hideaway Medley") Buddy, a native Texas guitar legend himself, and I talked about the anniversary of Stevie's passing. I played Buddy's excellent song "Stevie Rave On". It's one of my all time favorite SRV tributes because although heartfelt, it's upbeat and celebrates the positives of his life. (It's on Buddy's first solo release "Buddy Whittington" - get yourself a copy, the whole CD is stellar.) Buddy commented that when he's in Austin and he can, he makes a point of going by to see the statue and can't help but think "Not bad for a boy from Oak Cliff."

No, not bad at all.

Also, strangely (if you haven't figured out by listening to the stories on the radio show by now, my life is full of sometimes wonderful, sometimes painful strange occurrences) I also happened to be in Austin the day of the unveiling and dedication of the statue. I had read some time before that they were going to put one up, but I had no idea when. Just fate, I guess, that I was there. Sometimes you're just in the right place at the right time. It was one of those big Texas blue sky days, and there was a feeling of love and comfort in the air. It was a day of healing. From what I know about him, I think Stevie would have been happy and proud.

So I think the fitting way to end this is with his own words. Most of us heard this song for the first time on the evening news because it got it's first public playing at his funeral here in Dallas at Laureland. I still think of it as the funeral song because of that, which is a shame, because when you listen to it, it's such a song of hope and looking forward to the future. And it is a reminder to us all that time is indeed ticking away. That is why I end my show every week by saying "Take care of yourselves, and take care of each other." You never know when the clock is going to stop for you or someone you love.

On August 27, 1990, Texas lost a true champion of the blues. But through the songs he left us, Stevie Rave On indeed!

And neither of my brothers plays drums. But other than that, I'm pretty sure I've played with this nut job. Supposingly this was a real posting on Craigslist. Thanks to Smokin' Joe Kubeck for sharing it with me:

Looking for someone special who would kill my drummer for $100.00. do not fear any negative consequences for this act. any self respecting law enforcement agency would gladly turn the other cheek once they hear this guy "play". I am tired of hearing his 70's style fills put in the wrong spot and ending one half beat early or late depending on how much he's had to drink. I am tired of him standing up behind his drums between songs and ripping his shirt off and flexing his muscles at wedding receptions where we were hired to play Air Supply, carpenters , and ann murray songs because "chicks dig the pecs, dude". I am tired of him showing up 20 minutes late for rehearsals then pouting until someone helps him load in his drums, then taking 30 minutes to set them up and needing a smoke break every 15 minutes, then wanting to leave early because"this chick is so fine, I can't say no, and she knows record people dude, so it's for the band" I am totally done with him calling me up at midnight to play me some damned jazz fusion album from 1981, crying and saying how we shouldn't have sold out to "the man"and asking if I know anyone who can get him some weed knowing full well I smoked twice in 69 and never touched it after that. I am sick of him farting on stage where the drum mics pick it up and thinking this shit is funny. I am tired of kicking off slow ballads at well under 80 bpm only to have them morph into the methamphetimine version of flight of the bumble bee, because that's the tempo he "feels" it at. I am tired of having to carry jumper cables to the gig because "I must have left the dome light on again, dude"instead of admitting his 84 oldsmobile is a worn out piece of crap. I am tired of him asking when he's gonna get a drum solo.. I am tired of paying his tab at restaurants because "that chick must have stole my wallet man, but it was worth it 'cause she was a phreak".. I will not move my amp again so he can put another new cymbal on the stage, because "when we learn some fusion i'll need this sound".........please somebody kill this motherfucker. i can't do it because he's my brother and mom would be so pissed off even though she thinks the band would probably sound better too. besides, if you are good at killing drummers, you could probably make a lot of money in this town.

PS - Don't think I don't know there are a BUNCH of great (and probably accurate) female lead singer jokes out there. After 27 years, I might have heard them all. My favorite? How do you know you're female lead singer is at the door? She has forgotten her key and doesn't know when to come in.

Oh, yeah. Hardy, har,har. At least I don't fart into drum mics.

In the Beginning...

"The Natural Order of Musical Instruments"

In the beginning there was a bass. It was a Fender, probably a Precision, but it could have been a Jazz - nobody knows. Anyway, it was very old ... definitely pre-C.B.S. And God looked down upon it and saw that it was good. He saw that it was very good in fact, and couldn't be improved on at all (though men would later try). And so He let it be and He created a man to play the bass. And lo the man looked upon the bass, which was a beautiful 'sunburst' red, and he loved it. He played upon the open E string and the note rang through the earth and reverberated throughout the firmaments (thus reverb came to be). And it was good.

And God heard that it was good and He smiled at his handiwork. Then in the course of time, the man came to slap upon the bass. And lo it was funky. And God heard this funkiness and He said, "Go man, go." And it was good. And more time passed, and, having little else to do, the man came to practice upon the bass. And lo, the man came to have upon him a great set of chops. And he did play faster and faster until the notes rippled like a breeze through the heavens. And God heard this sound which sounded something like the wind, which He had created earlier. It also sounded something like the movement of furniture, which He hadn't even created yet, and He was not so pleased.

And He spoke to the man, saying, "Don't do that!" Now the man heard the voice of God, but he was so excited about his new ability that he slapped upon the bass a blizzard of funky notes. And the heavens shook with the sound, and the Angels ran about in confusion. (Some of the Angels started to dance, but that's another story.) And God heard this, how could He miss it. And lo He became bugged. And He spoke to the man, and He said, "Listen man, if I wanted Jimi Hendrix I would have created the guitar. Stick to the bass parts."

And the man heard the voice of God, and he knew not to mess with it. But now he had upon him a passion for playing fast and high. The man took the frets off of the bass which God had created. And the man did slide his fingers upon the fretless fingerboard and play melodies high upon the neck. And, in his excitement, the man did forget the commandment of the Lord, and he played a frenzy of high melodies and blindingly fast licks. And the heavens rocked with the assault and the earth shook, rattled and rolled. Now God's wrath was great. And His voice was thunder as He spoke to the man. And He said, "O.K. for you, pal. You have not heeded My word. Lo, I shall
create a soprano saxophone and it shall play higher than you can even think of." "And from out of the chaos I shall bring forth the drums. And they shall play so many notes thine head shall ache, and I shall make you to always stand next to the drummer." "You think you're loud? I shall create a stack of Marshall guitar amps to make thine ears bleed. And I shall send down upon the earth other instruments, and lo, they shall all be able to play higher and faster than the bass."

"And for all the days of man, your curse shall be this; that all the other musicians shall look to you, the bass player, for the low notes. And if you play too high or fast all the other musicians shall say "Wow" but really they shall hate it. And they shall tell you you're ready for your solo
career, and find other bass players for their bands. And for all your days if you want to play your fancy licks you shall have to sneak them in like a thief in the night." "And if you finally do get to play a solo, everyone shall leave the bandstand and go to the bar for a drink." And it was so.

Update on Joe Jonas

As promised, here is the information on Joe Jonas and his condition since having a stroke on 8/2.
He was initially released from the hospital after several days and taken to a rehabilitation center, but after complaining of chest pains, he was moved back to the hospital. All tests looked good (including an EKG), so on 8/12 they moved him back to rehab.

Today I received this e-mail from T-Wayne, keyboardist for The Silvertones, who have been gigging with Joe:

Hello all......We went to visit Joe Jonas in the rehab hospital last night. He was sleeping, but the nurse was coming in for a medical treatment. She woke him up, so we visited for a few minutes.He is looking some what better, getting some rest and eating well. He is very alert (when he is awake, LOL) and likes the company as long as you don't stay too long, he tires quickly.Cards, letters and pictures are welcome.I've been asked about a benefit by several people, and yes there is one in the planning stages. I will try to keep everyone posted on the plans as soon as the date and venue are set. For now, donations of items for an auction and monetary contributions are being accepted through Joe's management and record label (Whale Records). This information and more are being posted on "Joe Jonas Benefit" face book page. More info to come! And, of course, your positive thoughts and prayers are welcome and needed for a speedy recovery! Many of you have heard me joke that Joe is such a true friend to me that he played both my wedding and my divorce, which is true. However, all kidding aside, he also watched out for me and helped me get through the dark days of my divorce, and gives me wise, loving and, when necessary, brutally honest practical advise about all aspects of my life! It is rare in life that you make a friend who cares about you not for what you can do for them, but just for who you are. Joe is that kind of man. The reason you have not heard me talk about it more on the radio show is quite frankly I can't do it without crying, as I am doing now as I type this. Please be patient - I will share all with you as I can.

Something very cool is going on this weekend.

After his appearance In March of this year with Washboard Jackson (Collectively they are known as Trainreck) at the South by Southwest Festival, KM Williams has been signed to a record deal with Dialtone Records out of Austin.

KM has invited me and Andrea Dawson to sing with him on 3 cuts for the CD. I couldn't be more excited! I am thrilled my friend has this new opportunity to record and reach an even wider audience, and I am honored he has asked me to be a part of it. Andrea and I have worked up harmony parts for the three songs.

Thursday, October 29th, 2009 is National Cat Day. My own kitties, Starsky & Hutch (named after the original TV show, not that ridiculous movie) wouldn't ever let me forget it if I didn't mention it. They are a constant source of love and amusement for me. They have been brought up on the blues, and bless their purring little hearts, have become somewhat of blues purists. Case in point - on Wednesday nights, they will sleep peacefully through Scott's Texas Blues Radio program, but the moment it's over and Dave Chao's "Twisted Kicks" comes on, they raise thier heads, glare at the radio, and leave the room!

So in honor of Starsky & Hutch and cool kitties everywhere, I'll be talking about National Cat Day on my show Thursday, as well as playing a special kitty blues - Hudson & the HooDoo Cats "I Like Kitties". If you love cats, you don't want to miss it.

Just read this note on the Continental Club's "Continental Confidential" weekly newsletter:

Austin guitarist Charlie Sexton was offered his old job back in Bob Dylan's band, replacing another Texas guitar great, Denny Freeman. Freeman may not have seen the last of Dylan, since Dylan himself said that he may be calling him back. I'm sure Charlie is pleased to be back with Dylan, and Denny says "Well at least it's Charlie."

Well, it's like I always say, no band lasts forever.

So...

What does this mean for the newly reformed ARC Angels? Will we EVER get that new CD now?

Will Denny Freeman head back to Dallas? Will we get to see him start playing more gigs in the DFW area?

Texas Slim has a brand new CD out this month on the Topcat label. Jackie Don Loe also releases a CD this month, his first, titled "Tracks". And JJ & the Detonators are a new band consisting of some veteran Fort Worth Bluesmen - Jumpin' Jerry Clark on guitar, Even Steven Springer on drums and Cadillac Johnson on bass. Handling the vocal and harmonica duties is George Brock Jr, son of St. Louis blues legend Big George Brock.

Many of you who attend KNON events or listen to my radio show are familiar with my niece and sometimes co-host, Miss Amanda. Well, currently the UT Arlington Junior (who has a 4.0 average - yes, I'm bragging, but that girl is kicking butt!) is in London, England for 6 weeks, where she was accepted into a study program at the University of Middlesex. What do you wear when you're shopping at Harrod's in London on a Thursday afternoon while back in the States your aunt hosts Big Texas Blues? Tonight's Sunday Blues Happening Jam at Nate's Seafood in Addison will be dedicated to the memory of bassist Johnny Woods. Johnny held the bass spot for the entire 3 1/2 years of the jam, never missing a Sunday. Donations to help with Johnny's funeral costs will be collected at the jam. Carl Bush will stand in tonight on bass with the band.

I've said many times, this jam is by far the best in the Dallas/Ft Worth area because everyone feels welcome, and the jams represent the whole of the blues: traditional, soul, classic, country, funky and always fun! Johnny was an intricate part of this, and will be missed by all his friends and fans alike. Come out tonight, sit in, jam, and pay your respects to a classy Old-School Bluesman, our friend Johnny Woods.

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE.

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and
knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered
a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating,
choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?As a junior high student in the late 1970's, when Desoto, Texas was a close minded, tiny, backwards little country town that thought itself a big city, an enlightened history teacher turned one class over to me to talk to my classmates about the struggles of women just to have basic rights. All these years later, exercising the right to vote is still one of my passions. Women (and thinkers of both genders) we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.' Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party – remember to vote.

I'm delighted to announce the birth Wednesday of Kaylynn Denney, daughter of our drummer Darren, his wife Hali (who, let's face it, did all the REAL work Wednesday!) and new big brother Spencer. At 9 pounds 9 ounces and 20 inches long, Kaylyne is a big girl - a Texas-size beauty. Congratulations to the Denney's on their new addition.

I'm just hoping Darren will encourage her to be a drummer, like he's been doing with Spencer. There's never enough great drummers, and Kaylyne and Spencer couldn't have a better teacher than The Professor!

ALL IS NOT LOST, IN A HRC SENSE

I am a BIG Hard Rock Cafe fan. After all, it started in London, and I'm a Anglophile to the bone. When I learned back in the 80's that Dallas was getting a HRC, I was so excited, I made my boyfriend at the time drive me to the construction site at 3 am, climbed the fence, and snuck in. (I wanted to be the first one in the new place!). At that time Dallas felt so behind the rest of the world in cool big city amenities. Getting a Hard Rock felt glamourous. And I still seek out the local HRC in every place I visit. It's still fun to me.

I'll even admit to shedding a few tears earlier this year when I finally got up the nerve to drive by the now empty corner of McKinney and Routh, where they not only razed the building to the ground, but a level below - to the basement. I'm easily bored and thrive on change, but having lived here my whole live, I DO have an emotional attachment to a few places (including the Granada Theater - God bless Mike Schroder for loving the place as much as me! He is one of my heroes for taking such good care of her) and the Dallas Hard Rock Cafe was one of those. I had so much fun there over the years. I once kissed John Waite in the lobby, and played on the stage many times with 5 different bands, sharing many a plate of nachos with my awesomely cool niece Amanda, not to mention celebrating plenty of my birthdays there, attending Guitar Show parties and seeing some great bands. The HRC partnered with KNON on several occasions, including a Thursday night blues series I hosted several years back. I was enraged at the closing - that a city our size, with the surrounding teeming Metroplex, couldn't keep it open. I really blamed the city for taking the focus off UpTown as a destination for tourists, and sending them instead to the bland lets-pretend-we're-Times-Square Victory Plaza outside the AAC.

So I was thrilled to read the following article this morning. All is not lost. Hey, you can take the girl out of rock (and give her the blues), but you can't take the rock out of the girl.

And I'm betting they'll resume their relationship with the local Blues scene, unlike that other big chain restaurant/concert place that recently came to town, that refuses to even acknowledge KNON or Southwest Blues......

So, Yes, a New Hard Rock Cafe's Coming to Dallas. Hard Rock Hotel Too.

Gone, but absolutely not forgotten.
A very curious note this morning, courtesy The Miami Herald. Because in its story about the Seminole Tribe striking a deal to put a Hard Rock Cafe inside the new $1.3-billion Yankee Stadium, along with an eatery called NYY Steak, there was this reference to the tribe's plans for expanding the chain: "In total, the tribe owns 127 Hard Rock Cafes, not including the new one to be built in Yankee Stadium plus two others planned in Seattle and Dallas." Pardon?

Of course, the old McKinney Avenue location's was razed in January. And we've heard rumblings about a Hard Rock Hotel: That was, in fact, the original plan for the St. Regis Hotel site in Uptown, says its developer; and there have been rumors swirling for more than a year that it might yet wind up in Victory Park.
New York-based publicist Marissa Mastellone, who handles PR for the Hard Rock's hotels and casinos, tells Unfair Park this morning that there are "no plans for a Hard Rock Hotel Dallas," at least in the next two years. "But I have a call already in to my development team based at the Hard Rock Corp. headquarters in Orlando to give me info on if they are at least 'looking'," she says, and promises to get back with more later.
As for a new Hard Rock Cafe here, Florida-based John Gogarty, who handles that side of the chain's publicity, is in transit from New York and has been unavailable for comment. We've left messages at his office and on his cell, and we'll update when he calls back.
Update: Gogarty has called back, but he's not sure "whether [the Miami] reference was a line from a press conference or something else." He too has said he will "check to see what's cooking" and get back later today with an official statement. But he does not that "Dallas is obviously a very important location to Hard Rock, and unfortunately it didn't work out there the first time." Which doesn't mean there won't be a second.
Update to the Update: At 9:25 a.m., Amanda Early, another publicist for Hard Rock, sends the official word: It's a go. Dunno where, dunno when. But Hard Rock returns. As in:

We believe that Dallas, and surrounding areas, are important markets for Hard Rock International.
We are actively exploring other opportunities in the area, including a Hard Rock Hotel/entertainment complex and more strategic locations for a Hard Rock Cafe in this market. A number of locations are currently under consideration.

1. It becomes more important to find a place on stage for your fan than your amp.
2. Your gig clothes make you look like George Burns out for a round of golf.
3. All your fans leave by 9:30 p.m.
4. All you want from groupies is a foot massage and back rub.
5. You love taking the elevator because you can sing along with most of your play list.
6. Instead of a keyboard player, your band wants to spring for a roadie.
7. You don't know (or care) who any of the new bands are.
8. You need your glasses to see the amp settings.
9. You've thrown out your back jumping off the stage.
10. You feel like shite before the gig even starts.
11. The waitress is your daughter.
12. You find your drink tokens from last month's gig in your guitar case.
13. You refuse to play without earplugs.
14. You ask the club owner if you can start at 8:30 instead of 9:30.
15. You check the TV schedule before booking a gig.
16. You're related to at least one member in the band.
17. You need a nap before the gig.
18. During the breaks, you now go to the van to lay down.
19. You prefer a music stand with a light.
20. You don't recover from a Saturday night gig until Tuesday afternoon.

I just love Christmas decorations. You know when you're in the store and you see all that Christmas stuff for sale, like Christmas toilet paper, and you think "Who buys this stuff?" I confess, it's me! My birthday's in December and when I was a really little kid, I swear I thought the whole world decorated just for me! (That Diva attitude has been in the making a LONG time.) Too gaudy? Too many colors? Too big a tree? Not possible - bring on the Griswald effect!

FUN FACTS ABOUT BIG TEX

It's time again for the State Fair of Texas! I love the State Fair! I'm proud to say I have been every year of my life, including the year my mother was pregnant with me! For me, skipping a year would be like skipping my birthday or Christmas. Just not acceptable!

And speaking of Big Tex, here's some things about the world biggest cowboy that even dedicated State Fair goers might not know:

Big Tex started out as Santa Claus, installed as a 1949 Christmas promotion in Kerens, Texas.
After a couple of years, the novelty wore off, and in 1951 State Fair President (and former mayor) R.L. Thornton made a deal to purchase Santa for $750. After a makeover by Dallas artist and stage designer Jack Bridges, Big Tex made his debut at the 1952 State Fair of Texas.

Big Tex was kind of shy and quiet at first, but started talking in 1953. He received an extreme makeover in 1997 resulting in a more mature Tex showing a little gray in his sideburns and the addition of a friendly wave. His earlier armature was tossed and he was fitted with a new, cage-like skeleton consisting of 4,200 feet of steel rods weighing 3 tons. In 2000 he began moving his head.

Big Tex is a popular guy! In addition to local, regional and international news coverage, Big Tex also "co-starred" with Ann-Margaret in the locally shot remake of the movie "State Fair."

Tex's current clothier of choice is Fort Worth based Williamson-Dickie. Every few years, the wear and tear of the Texas climate necessitates all new clothes. The years in between his clothes are dry cleaned before the Fair. Here's some of Tex's measurements:
Height: 52 ft tall
Chest: 31 ft * Biceps: 7 ft 8 in * Hands: 3 ft long
Boots: 7 ft 7 in tall * Boot Size: 70
Head: 8 ft from chin to top * Hat Size 75 Gallon

Since 2002, Richardson based vocal talent Bill Bragg has supplied the voice for Big Tex.

AUSTIN, TX – Omar Kent Dykes and Jimmie Vaughan, whose new CD, On the Jimmy Reed Highway, is in the Top 5 on the Billboard magazine blues chart, are bringing their all-star salute to the blues master to national television with a one-hour special on the critically-acclaimed PBS concert series, “Austin City Limits,” airing October 27. Joining the two for this stellar concert are special guests Kim Wilson, Lou Ann Barton, Delbert McClinton, James Cotton and Gary Clark, Jr., all of whom appear on the new CD. The backing band for the show includes Derek O’Brien on guitar, Ronnie James on bass and Wes Starr on drums.

The high energy show, fueled by the howling vocals of Omar Kent Dykes and the sinewy lead guitar work of Jimmie Vaughan, features performances of most of the songs from the new CD, including such Jimmy Reed favorites as “Baby What You Want Me to Do,” “Bright Lights Big City,” “Big Boss Man,” “Good Lover,” “Caress Me Baby,” and “Hush Hush,” as well a dynamic version of “Bad Boy,” a tune made famous by legendary Reed guitarist Eddie Taylor (whose original version featured Reed on harmonica).

Just a heads up that Chef Nathan Peck, known to blues fans and lovers of fabulous cajun food worldwide as Nate, will return again this year to present a cooking demonstration as a Celebrity Chef Saturday October 6th at 4:30 pm in the Creative Arts Building at the Great State Fair of Texas!

Nate's seafood gumbo is my favorite in the whole world. Matter of fact, it was the one thing I craved most while I was away in Scotland last year, and made sure to go get some the moment I came back.

Nate is a tireless supporter of my KNON BIG TEXAS BLUES radio show, my band Blue Lisa & the The Big D Playboys (we'll be performing at Nate's that week on Thursday, October 4th) , and all the blues musicians in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. And you just haven't lived until you've seen him doing the "Nate Boogie." So take advantage of this rare opportunity to see the master at work.

Thanks to Chuck Nevitt for bringing this story to my attention. Chuck certainly appreciates Denny, having released my favorite Freeman CD "A Tone For My Sins" on his Dallas Blues Society label.

Denny has laughingly told me before that he and Derek O'Brien manage to fly pretty low beneath the radar, but that I am constantly trying to rouse them out. And I'm only too happy to be able to shine the light on both of these excellent guitarists. EVERYONE who loves great music should know both their names.

ETTA JAMES, AL GREEN & BB KING SHOW LAST SUNDAY

Sunday night I went to the Etta James, Al Green & BB King show courtesy of Ginger, KNON's Thursday night Texas Blues Radio host, who was generous enough to offer me an extra ticket she had. Thanks again Ginger!

Last time this grouping came through town, Etta missed the show due to illness. She has been in the hospital recently as well, so there was debate up until almost showtime that she might miss this one too.

Fortunately, that was not the case. Miss Etta was there, looking VERY slender (thanks to her weight loss surgery) in slim black jeans, black cowboy boots, a black sequined tank top and a white waist length collarless jacket with silver glitter stripes. Her hair was wavy and platinum blond and she wore a black knit skull cap. She looked fabulous, was in spectacular voice, and a great mood, humping her chair, patting her crotch (I'm so glad she's not mellowed out!) and telling her stories. I especially liked the one where she said she was approached by a woman while shopping in Walmart who said "You talk just like Etta James sings." (Now, I don't know about you, but I'd die if I walked into Walmart and there was Etta James! But I guess these days we're ALL in a Walmart sometime.) Anyway, one of her grand kids piped up and said "She IS Etta James" and Etta said "Shut up. Don't be telling them I'm Etta James. They'll think I've got money and take you. And I do have some money, but I don't want to spend it getting you back!" And of course the lady then asks "Will you sing "At Last" at my wedding." And Etta proceeded to tell us about all the people who have gotten married, lucky or pregnant listening to that song. And she warned a woman on the front row "Don't go home and get pregnant tonight." In addition to "At Last" she also did Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me To Do", "You Can Leave Your Hat On", "Sugar On The Floor" & of course, "I'd Rather Go Blind." What magic that woman weaves with her voice, and yes, she brought me to tears twice in her set. I have to be honest here: although Ginger and I had pretty good floor seats, we jumped seats for Etta's set, and ended up setting fifth row directly in front of her. How cool!!!

Al Green was up next with his soul style review. In addition to 2 back up singers (one of whom he introduced as his daughter) he also had two young men who did nothing all night but make costume changes and dance! Counting Al, there were 14 people on stage. 14! In these times when it's so expensive to tour and everyone is cutting back, it was great fun to see such an elaborate show. Al looked like he was really enjoying himself and I thought throwing long stemmed roses out to the ladies in throughout the show was an especially classy touch.

BB King was, of course, the headliner. Looking a little older and a little grayer, he was however much more energetic than the last time I saw him about a year ago, and while not functioning as the main guitarist, he played much more than he has the last three times I saw him. His voice seemed stronger as well. Of course, he is still the same gracious performer, thanking the audience for coming, and making it a point to introduce the members of the BB King Orchestra by name. And he always has a couple of good stories to tell, including the one he told of sneaking across the tracks late at night as a kid when they'd come into town on Saturday night and drinking from the "White Only" water fountain, only to think "Why do they make such a fuss about this white only water? It tastes exactly the same as the colored only water?" He also let us ladies know at this point in his life that we were quite safe if left alone in a room with him, although that might not have been the case 50 years ago! What a flirt! (Can you imagine BB & Etta backstage flirting with each other?! You know it must happen, and I'd love to hear that!!)

It was a wonderful evening. It was also well attended, another great thing to see at a blues show. Especially considering across town it was competing that night with another very big show: The Jimmy Reed Highway with Jimmie Vaughan, Lou Ann Barton, Kim Wilson, & Omar Dykes at the Dallas House of Blues. In addition to that, all the regular local stuff was still going on: Jackie Don Loe's spectacular weekly jam at Nate's in Addison, Hash Brown's Sunday Pearl jam in downtown Dallas, Gunzy Trevino, Guthrie Kennard & Mace Maben's Sunday jam Key's Lounge jam in Ft. Worth. I say it every week, but I'll say it again: how lucky we are in the DFW area to have so many choices of great shows to see every day of the week. I hope you appreciate that, and take advantage of it as often as possible. And for those of you living in other places, why not consider making Dallas your next vacation destination and experiencing our incredible blues scene for yourselves? I'll even make this offer - e-mail me when you're going to be in town, and I'll e-mail you back with a list of what's going on while you're here.

One more thing I want to mention for the benefit of all the performers and musicians reading this. From the seats I was now in for BB's set, (the fourth set of seats we'd set in that night!) I could see something most of the audience couldn't. I could see them bring him to the side of the stage, sitting in what looked like a wheelchair. As the bandleader introduced the BB King Orchestra, a man bent down in front of BB and polished his shoes. I think there's a lesson for all of us to be learned here. At 81, with as he told us "old age, bad knees and diabetes", after literally decades of performing, the man had enough pride in himself and his art to make sure he was at his best when he walked on to that stage, down to the high shine of his shoes. It is a pet peeve of mine to go see a show, and the artist gets on stage looking like he's just worked on his car. I say "he" because the women usually put more effort into their appearance. But all of us should remember to have respect for our appearance as a part of our art. Be proud of what you do. You have every reason to feel pride as you walk up on the stage. After all, if you want them to sit there and watch you, shouldn't you give them something to look at?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KENNY CHAVEZ!!

This Thursday, August 3rd, is the birthday of one of my very favorite people, my bass player Kenny Chavez.

Although I was really sad when my last bass player, Lenno Summers, told me he was leaving the band, Kenny has managed to do something amazing for me. After 20+ years of playing, he made gigging fun for me again. Matter of fact, I'm having the most fun with my current line-up than I have since my rock and roll road band in the 80's. All of them are great musicians that get my sarcastic sense of humor without taking offense. (And I've recently been hurt by someone letting me know not everyone finds my sense of humor funny.) You should hear the off-mic on-stage banter between me, Kenny, Rob Donavan & Darrin Denny. But, then again, maybe you shouldn't: you should just keep thinking we're all really sweet, nice people!

In addition to being a great bandmate, Kenny's also a true and loyal friend, something I've really needed in these last couple of very trying months. I've always valued loyalty in my friendships, but after the beating I've taken this year when I've had to realize two of my closest "friends" were not, in actuality, my friends at all, it has become even more precious to me.

But enough of this touchy-feely crap. I like him, and it's his birthday. We'll be celebrating it at the jam Wednesday night at Purdy's, where the ladies (and, who knows, maybe some of the men) will be lining up to spank him. But that's the same as every Wednesday, now isn't it? So I'll think of something else we can do to celebrate.

I'm just hoping that because it's his birthday, he doesn't chose to wear his birthday suit to the party!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WENT TO THE DRIVE-IN MOVIES?

I did something so fun on Friday night, I have to tell you about it.

My neice Amanda & I went to the Galaxy Drive In Theater. It's located South of Dallas, just past Ennis off of I45, which might involve a little drive time if you live in the northern or western parts of the Metroplex, but trust me, it's worth it. The box office and concessions open at 6:30 and the first movie starts at 9. Never one to be early (as my current band will tell you!), We arrived around 8:00 and got in, got a good spot and got in and out of the concession stand in plenty of time for the start of the movie.

What a blast! I have many fond memories of drive in's growing up, as my grandfather was a movie projectionist (from the time he was in his late teens until they made him retire in his 70's) and my family went often as we got in free, but Amanda, because of her age (she's 18), had never been to a drive in. Both of us had such a great time! Megaplex multi screen box movie theaters have taken over the movie going experience these days, but there was a time in when the Drive In Theater was king. Read this bit of Texas Drive In Theater history from the web site http://www.driveinmovie.com/ :

Texas was host to the 3rd drive-in theatre to open in America, at Galveston in July of 1934 (the 1st & 2nd had opened in New Jersey and Pennsylvania), and thereafter - as in most things, Texas went at it in a BIG way .. by the late 50's,generally the peak years for American drive-ins, Texans had thebiggest peak in the industry, hosting nearly 400 outdoor theatres.
Although the state had held-out in true Alamo fashion, longer than most,and, was still harboring nearly 200 drive-in theatres even 20 years afterthe boom .. but ultimately, Texas would see their number decline by 96% and presently, there are only 16 Drive-ins operating in the Lone Star state. On an UP note: 5 of these were built or revived in the past four years, and the next .. a new twin-screen Drive-in (Lubbock) will be lit in July of 2003.

Every single thing about our experience at The Galaxy was fantastic - the ticket prices extremely inexpensive (especially for a first run double bill: $6 - adults, $2 - children 5 to 11, children under 5 free), the food was good quality and reasonably priced - a hamburger was $2 and a giant Texas sized popcorn $5.50 (and the popcorn was fresh and hot!), the facilities were clean, the classic window speakers very cool (as well as the 50's rockabilly style tunes played through them before the movies) and every person we came in to contact with was helpful and friendly. We brought bug spray, but didn't need it. And with the very mild Texas summer we're having, it was quite comfortable with the windows rolled down. We stayed in the car, but you can bring your lawn chairs or blankets and sit outside your vehicle if you like. We had so much fun, we're planning on returning very soon.

Open every night, 364 nights a year (closed on Christmas Eve), a night at the Galaxy Drive In would be a great as a family night, a night out with the girls (or boys) or a nostalgic, inexpensive (and romantic) date night.

ANNIVERSARY OF THE PASSING OF SAM MYERS

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the passing of Sweet Sam Myers.

Even now, it's hard to believe he's gone. But then, he truly was a larger than life personality, so even in death, he is still with so many of us everyday. I myself can't bear to delete his phone numbers from my cell phone. Occasionally when I'm scrolling through for a number, I come across his name and it makes me smile. And everytime I walk into The Hole In The Wall I still glance over to his spot by the kitchen to see if he's there. Which he's not. But to me, it's still his seat, and always will be. And I will always look for him there.

A group of us gathered yesterday at the Dixie House restaurant where Sam liked to eat to tell our Sammy stories and, well, just to be together on that day when we were all thinking about him. And what a group it was: Joe Jonas (The man I think Sam had the most respect for. How many pictures are there of Sam and Joe together hanging on walls in this town? What a amazing duo they were!), Joanna Iz (who so lovingly watched out for Sam and made sure he was taken care of, and how he loved her for it), Hash Brown (Sam often said he wished Hash was his son), Miss Marcy, Andrea Dawson, Kathy Prather, Anson (theirs was not just a remarkable musical partnership, but a remarkable friendship) and Rene Funderburgh , John Street, Jeff (who helped Sammy write his book) and Robin Horton, Ravis (who lived upstairs from Sam and made it her mission to make sure he was fed and watched out for on a daily basis), Brenda, (who slept on Sam's couch for many a night in the last months of his life watching over him), Lisa Tindell and her son Austin (Sam loved kids), and Vicky Wiley (who accompanied Sam to the Mayo clinic in the months before his death, and stayed by his side when he was, shall we say, in a less than good mood. If that doesn't qualify you as an angel, I don't know what does.) There were a couple of others who's names I didn't catch, one man who Hash told me Sam lived with for the first few months when he moved to Dallas. For sure, a group that truly loved Sam Myers the man, not just Sam Myers the musician. I think he would have been proud to see us together, but then again, he might have wondered why we didn't call more people!!

Joanna brought a picture of Sammy (smoking) so he could be with us, but I knew already that he was with us all, and in fact, had never left our hearts and never will.

I thought our little meeting would be all about Sam, but in fact, it turned out to be a chance to catch up with each other and just chat in a way you can't do when you're playing your gig or even hanging at a jam. And it dawned on me that this was one of Sammy's greatest gifts to us all, because without him, this eclectic group of friends might never have been a group at all. And I wouldn't be suprised to find out that was his plan all along.

Thanks Sam. I still love you, and miss you, every day.

JANIVA MAGNESS ARTICLE IN REDBOOK

Those of you who listen to my radio show have heard Janiva Magness. Lately I've played cuts off her most recent CD "Do I Move You", and most often it's her awesome version of "You Were Never Mine". I was also thrilled to interview her on air last year the morning after she won "Best Contemporary Female Vocalist" at the 2006 Blues Music Awards, which she won again in 2007.

I was lucky enough to meet her in person in Grapevine a few days later, and luckier still to get to see her perform. She's a dynamic, beautiful (I mean really beautiful - I'm in envy of that gorgeous head of hair!), fun, sassy full-of-live DIVA in the best sense of the word. But you would never know from what you see and hear now the obstacles this woman has overcome. Why am I sharing this with you? Because it's so easy to get caught up in the trials and tribulations of everyday life and think you should have a little pity party for yourself. I know - I've been doing it myself way too much lately.

70TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROBERT JOHNSON RECORDING IN DALLAS

Those of you listening to my show this week heard me play all of the songs and alternate takes Robert Johnson recorded in Dallas on June 19 & 20, 1937. This is a huge event in blues history. It was the second of only two recording sessions Johnson ever did. (The first was held in San Antonio in November of 1936).

I have a gig of my own on Wednesday, but there is a celebration of the Johnson recordings going on that I really want to tell you about. Local guitarist Joel Foy has partnered with Pearl in downtown Dallas to present an evening celebrating the recordings. Read this from Joel's weekly e-mail:

ANDREA DAWSON ON BIG TEXAS BLUES

I love the word Diva. But somewhere down the line, people have defined it to mean a "difficult" (and THAT's putting it nicely) female vocalist.

However, if you look up the definition, Webster says " a usually glamourous and successful female performer or personality: a popular female singer".

If you ask me, it should continue to read ":Andrea Dawson".

As any one who has seen her perform can attest, Andrea is a natural talent - this woman was born to sing. And nothing pleases me more than to see her out and about getting to do it so much these days! You go girl indeed! Aside from being an incredible vocalist with a warm, engaging stage presence, she's got a wicked sense of humor, making her one of my favorite running buddies and partners in crime! (The trouble we've caused - whoops - I mean seen!)

So I am thrilled that she is taking time from her incredibly busy schedule to be my special guest this Thursday on BIG TEXAS BLUES. Andrea's going to come in to do the "12 Bar Blues" series. Always articulate and witty, I can't wait to hear what songs she brings in as her influences and her explanation of why they have been so.

Thanks again to both of them for taking a break from their busy schedules to share their time, talents and insights with all my listeners.

We've got one more Thursday in the month - the one coming up, March 28th. I'll be presenting a blues history segment on The Queen of the Blues herself - Dinah Washington, who strangly enough, died the day I was born - December 14, 1963. But what an interesting, life she had. Find out more about it in the first half of Thursday's show.

The last half of the show, my special guest live in the studio will be 17 year old blues guitarist Jessica Munn. Jessica will be making her very first (of what I hope to be many) appearance on BIG TEXAS BLUES doing the "12 Bar Blues" series.

If you've been lucky enough to see her play, you already know she is a talented guitarist. What you may not know is what an intelligent and gracious young lady she is. Always a pleasure to share a stage with, Jessica has a talent that ranks her right up amongst the much older, more experienced pros - she listens and plays WITH the band. Trust me, some people NEVER figure that out. Quite clever of her to get it so young. And that's part of the reason why so many of us - myself, Andrea Dawson, Jackie Don Loe - have taken her under our collective wings.

You know me, I'm a big believer that there's always room for another Blueswoman, and I can't wait to hear from Jessica herself what has influenced her to choose the Blues. Listen carefully folks. It's the young women like Jessica Munn and Kayla Reeves that are the future of the blues. (I'm thinking we're in good hands here.)

Cheryl will be presenting a blueswoman history segment on Sister Rosetta Tharpe, as well as bringing in and playing music by other influential blueswomen. Cheryl has taken the DFW area captive since moving here from Boston. Tune in and hear her discuss some of her favorite blueswomen.

Blue Lisa is such a fan of Nate's seafood gumbo, that she has to have it at least once a week, or suffers terrible withdrawl!

Don't say I didn't warn you. If you missed it, get ready to start hearing about it all over the place.

What a great time last night at KC's. Pat Boyack, Red Young and Brian "H-Bomb" Ferguson put on an awesome show, with a number of guests setting in, including myself, Cheryl Arena, Andrea Dawson, Ponty Bone, Hash Brown (popping in to play before heading over for the first night of his brand new jam in North Dallas), and the one and only Mr. Joe Jonas, in MY opinion, the best blues vocalist in this (and probably every other) area. I was honored to get invited up, but damn, did it have to be right after Andrea? She's my friend and I love her, but she's a tough act to follow!

Joanna Iz, publisher of "Southwest Blues Magazine", was in the house, and I saw her taking pictures, so hopefully some of those will end up in the magazine. (The October issue is on the streets. Be sure to check out my reviews of the new Cheryl Arena and Aaron Burton CD "Good Old Wagon", and also a cool new CD, "Lucky 13", from Australian singer/guitarist Fiona Boyes.)

Every week I tell you on BIG TEXAS BLUES to go out and see some live blues and support the scene, and this show was a true example of just that. Much, much thanks to Jeff & Robin Horton, Swag (also known as Mr & Mrs Salty), Jim Weiss, and Chuck Nevitt, all of whom put their money where their mouths were and made the whole thing possible.

Quite the night of funky blues in the super cool juke joint setting of KC's. Wow.

Over the years, I have checked periodically, but today www.LouAnnBarton.com actually came up when I searched for it!

Lou Ann is the reason I got into the blues. See her whenever and everytime you get the chance to. This woman is the real deal.

The first show I ever saw of hers, one show, one night, changed my whole life. Without her influence on me, I wouldn't be a Blue Lisa, and there would be no BIG TEXAS BLUES radio program.

If I was ever stranded on a deserted island, and allowed to bring only one CD, it would be Lou Ann's "Read My Lips" on the Antones label. If you don't own it, I strongly suggest you run (don't walk) to the nearest record store and buy a copy. Now. RIGHT NOW.

ANN RICHARDS PASSES

It was with great sadness I learned today of the passing last night of Ann Richards, former governor of the great state of Texas.

I was always a Ann Richards fan for a number of reasons. One, of course, was that she was a strong woman leader, encouraging other women and minorities to get involved with politics on a local, state and national level. Quoting her obituary in the New York Times today:

A champion of civil rights for minorities, gays and women, Ms. Richards first ran for governor calling for a “New Texas” that would offer more opportunity and power to those groups.

As governor, among other achievements, she fulfilled her campaign promise to bring more blacks, Hispanics and women into public office. She appointed the first black regent to the University of Texas and installed the first blacks and women on the state's legendary police force, the Texas Rangers. She also pushed for harsher penalties for polluters and gained control of the state’s insurance board in a drive to reduce the industry’s influence over state government.

Ms. Richards oversaw an expansion of the state’s prison system, increasing the space for prisoners by a third, and cracked down on the number of prisoners being paroled. She also instituted a major substance abuse program for prisoners. And she championed the creation of the Texas lottery as a source of public school financing. She bought the first scratch-off ticket herself on May 29, 1992.

She also was a tireless supporter of the arts in Texas, promoting Texas culture and the arts every where she went. Have to love that. I've always thought a world without the arts is a gray and bleak place indeed. That is one of the reasons I've gotten up early every Thursday morning for nearly seven years now to go down to KNON as an unpaid volunteer and bring you BIG TEXAS BLUES. Everyone needs to believe in something. I believe in the Blues. And I believed in Ann Richards.

I worked on Ann's campaign for re-election because I believed so strongly in what she stood for, the things that she had accomplished as Governor, and all the things she still wanted to get done.

One of the things I did was man the phones in the evenings, calling people who had voted for Ann in 1990. I considered myself fairly politically savvy, but was not prepared for what happened. Which was this. I would call people, thank them for voting for Governor Richards in the first election, and say "We hope we can count on your support in this election." Time after time I heard this a version of this "I like Ann. I think she's been a good governor. I think she's been good for Texas. But I'm a Republican, and I'm going to vote Bush."

The first time I heard it, I was literally speechless. They voted for her, liked her and thought she was doing a good job, AND YET WERE GOING TO VOTE FOR SOMEONE ELSE. I heard it so often, I quickly became numb to it, but by the end I was just disgusted. That kind of blind following scares the hell out of me. I hope it scares the hell out of all of you too. I just don't understand the logic of voting for someone, them getting into office and doing the things you wanted them to do, and then voting for someone else. I don't get it because there is no logic to it. Whatever.

No politician is perfect, and none are without fault, but to me Ann Richards embodied the Great State of Texas and was a superb representative of ALL it's people. With her quick wit, tall white Texas hairdo, and strong opinions, she was as much a Texas icon as Big Tex and the Lone Star Flag itself. Ann Richards was as Texan as they come. God bless her for it

I just received this e-mail from Hash Brown:

Sad news indeed!
I just got off the phone with Tom Ford, the owner over at the Hole in the wall. He informed me that this wednesday would be the last Hash Brown Hole in the Wall jam. Because of rising costs and declining revenues, he is unable to pay us the monies we make on wednesdays(the same pay without a raise for over 10 of the 12 years we have been there). He is contemplating closing during the week on nights, but i assume he will get someone to work for a percentage, which we will not do. I invite everyone to come out and help give the jam a good viking/new orleans funeral. I also wish Tom and the crew at the Hole the best in future endeavors. It has been an unforgetable 12 1/2 years!

And so there we have it folks. This year has seen the demise of both Hash's Bone Jam and The Hole In The Wall Jam, the longest running jams in Dallas.

Not a good sign of the times.

GREAT TIME AT THE TX INT'L BLUESFEST

What a great time I had at the Texas International Bluesfest on Saturday! The T-Bonz and I were already in a festive mood since it was Jim Hunton's birthday, but the enthusiastic response we received from the crowd really made our night!

I didn't get there in time to see all the acts (I hear Dallas's newest Blues Diva, 13 year old Kayla Reeves and her band Triple Threat were awesome - no surprise to me!), but I caught Cookie McGee's masterful set, and it was great to get to hang out with our friends The Silvertones, who not only played a fabulous set of their own, but then backed up Mr. Cold Blue Steel himself, James Buck.

My boys looked amazing and played even better! I dare say my boys were the eye candy of the evening - and ladies, you know how I like some eye candy at my shows! I was very, very proud to be on stage with all of them. Special thanks to Mick Carr for sitting in with us on drums. We owe you one!

And thanks again to James Buck for including us on the bill for this years Bluesfest, and for inviting me and Jim up to be part of his closing set! It was a fun night for us James. Thank you SO MUCH.

LADIES SING THE BLUES

Dallas -- Three female acts are among the headliners at the ninth annual Texas International Blues Festival. Blue Lisa and the T-Bonz, Cookie McGee, and Kayla Reeves & Triple Threat will be joining Dallas-based award-winning blues band the Silvertones on the stage at the Sons of Hermann Hall in Deep Ellum on Saturday, August 26.

Also appearing will be two-time winner best blues band Dallas Oserver Music Awards Cold Blue Steel, Elmo Blue, from Austin Trent Turner and the Moontowers, Damaged Goods, and new band Ed, plus special surprise guests.

Admisson is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets are general admisson and can be purchased via the internet at acteva.com/go/texasblues. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DENNY FREEMAN!

Today is the birthday of one of my all time favorite guitarist, Mr. Denny Freeman.

To call him a blues guitarist would only be lightly scratching the surface. He is an EXCELLENT blues guitarist: tasteful yet powerful. But Denny can play just about any style and make it work - blues, rock, jazz. Right now, he's on tour as guitarist for Bob Dylan. (Nice work if you can get it!) On top of that, he's also an accomplished pianist.

Some of my favorite stuff Denny's done include his solo CD's (my favorite - A TONE FOR MY SINS on Dallas Blues Society Records), his work on Angela Strehli's SOUL SHAKE (there just doesn't exist a more Texas guitar tone than this - and his playing on "Stranger Blues" is awesome), his work on Lou Ann Barton's READ MY LIPS (My all time favorite blues CD by anyone, anywhere), and his work on the Jimmie Vaughan solo CD's.
