Born Robert Calvin Brooks January 27, 1930. Died a Blues Legend, Bobby "Blue" Bland - June 23, 2013
I've been incredibly lucky during my 13+ years presenting Big Texas Blues to have some incredible things happen to me. Matter of fact, when Son Henry first set this Blog up for me, it was his intention I blog about those kinds of things. That isn't really how it worked out - I keep it mostly for the Live Blues Calendar, and a place to post my gigs, but upon the passing of Bobby Blue Bland this week, I decided I'd share a story.
I had the honor of interviewing Mr Bland on my show twice (and always got a secret thrill that I had Bobby Blue Bland's personal cell phone number in my phone!), and opened for him as part of the KNON review at the Granada Theater, but my favorite story is when I first met him.
Sam Myers had just put out his solo CD and had come to the Granada to give a copy to Bobby. Sam had asked me to help him get around to the area just outside the backstage door, so with him on my arm, we made our way out back and stood and waited. When it was time for Bobby to come out of his bus, he was to go straight to the stage - no one was to get between him and the door and stop him. A big, burly security guard of Bobby's announced loudly to the gathered bunch of fans "everyone back behind he barricade - this area is to be cleared immediately!". Of course, Sam didn't make any motion of moving - I'm sure he thought that didn't apply to him! The security guy came over to me and said "Everyone has got to clear the area." I just looked at him and said "This is Sam Myers. Are you telling me that Sam Myers has to clear the area?" He looked at me and then looked at Sam, and I think he was more than a little afraid of making Sam go! So he said "Alright, you and Mr Myers can stay." A few minutes latter, when Bobby came off the bus, he headed for the stage door, but seeing Sam he made a detour straight to Sam. You could tell he was really happy to see him, and he and Sam clasp hands strongly and warmly and exchanged a few words. Then Sam turned to me and said "Bobby, this is Blue Lisa, she interviewed you for KNON radio." Bobby turned to me, took my right hand in both his hands and shook it and thanked me for the interview and for playing his music.I gave him the copy of Sam's CD, which they discussed for a bit, and then his handlers came over and said "Mr Bland, they're waiting for you." Bobby and Sam said goodbye and he was gone. The next time Bobby did a show for KNON, he specifically asked for me to interview him again, and when he called in, before I put him on air, told me "I remember you, young lady. Sam Myers introduced us. If you're OK with Sam, you're OK with me." (Thanks Sammy! Some days it's VERY good to be Blue Lisa indeed!)
What an honor to have the chance not once but twice to interview Bobby Blue Bland - a true blues legend. Sam left us almost 7 years ago (can it really be that long?!) and now Bobby's gone too. But both men made indelible impressions on this world - and their blues live on.
Hope you enjoyed that. Now, on with keeping the blues live.....
