Dallas Area Rapid Transit and beer brewer MillerCoors are
teaming up again to offer free rides on New Year's Eve. That includes
buses, paratransit cars, light-rail trains and the Trinity Railway
Express to the CentrePort/DFW Airport Station in Fort Worth.
Another free alternative: a streetcar.
The DART streetcars will take you from Union Station on the edge of downtown Dallas to the intersection of Zang Boulevard and Davis Street in north Oak Cliff. From that stop, you can take the Route 723 shuttle, which circles the bars and restaurants in the Bishop Arts district.
Trips are every 20 minutes. On Monday, the last streetcar leaves Union Station at 12:50 a.m. and Bishop Arts at 1:08 a.m.
Or you can hop on a vintage trolley on the M-Line. The route loops around the Arts District downtown and travels along McKinney Avenue into Uptown.
You can see where the trolleys are along their route by pulling up the site mata.org/track. On Sundays, the trolleys run until 10 p.m.
Be Aware - Uber and Lyft will get you door to door, of course, but be prepared to pay a lot more than what the trip usually costs.
Revelers across the United States and abroad have reported shelling out hundreds of dollars to get home in the early hours of Jan. 1. That's because ride-hailing apps hike up their prices in response to demand.
Last year, Uber and Lyft introduced upfront pricing. Instead of giving you an estimated fare and a multiplier based on the demand at the time of your request — you had to do the math — now the apps show you the total fare before you order a ride.
If you want to avoid what the companies refer to as "surge pricing," consider ducking out of the party before midnight, or staying out even later. Lyft's prices usually spike after midnight and don't drop until around 3 a.m. Jan. 1, according to New Year's Day data provided by the company.
Unlike ride-hailing apps, taxi companies have fixed fares.
Yellow Cab, one of the major cab companies serving North Texas, has partnered with the Curb app to let people order rides without having to call.
Cowboy Cab, another big cab company, will have additional drivers across the Dallas area during New Year's festivities. They recommend that customers call 30 minutes ahead of the time they want to leave.
