LIVE DFW BLUES 06/27/13 THRU 07/03/13

Bobby-Blue Bland
Born Robert Calvin Brooks January 27, 1930. Died a Blues Legend, Bobby "Blue" Bland - June 23, 2013

I've been incredibly lucky during my 13+ years presenting Big Texas Blues to have some incredible things happen to me. Matter of fact, when Son Henry first set this Blog up for me, it was his intention I blog about those kinds of things. That isn't really how it worked out - I keep it mostly for the Live Blues Calendar, and a place to post my gigs, but upon the passing of Bobby Blue Bland this week, I decided I'd share a story.

I had the honor of interviewing Mr Bland on my show twice (and always got a secret thrill that I had Bobby Blue Bland's personal cell phone number in my phone!), and opened for him as part of the KNON review at the Granada Theater, but my favorite story is when I first met him.

Sam Myers had just put out his solo CD and had come to the Granada to give a copy to Bobby. Sam had asked me to help him get around to the area just outside the backstage door, so with him on my arm, we made our way out back and stood and waited. When it was time for Bobby to come out of his bus, he was to go straight to the stage - no one was to get between him and the door and stop him. A big, burly security guard of Bobby's announced loudly to the gathered bunch of fans "everyone back behind he barricade - this area is to be cleared immediately!". Of course, Sam didn't make any motion of moving - I'm sure he thought that didn't apply to him! The security guy came over to me and said "Everyone has got to clear the area." I just looked at him and said "This is Sam Myers. Are you telling me that Sam Myers has to clear the area?" He looked at me and then looked at Sam, and I think he was more than a little afraid of making Sam go!  So he said "Alright, you and Mr Myers can stay."  A few minutes latter, when Bobby came off the bus, he headed for the stage door, but seeing Sam he made a detour straight to Sam.  You could tell he was really happy to see him, and he and Sam clasp hands strongly and warmly and exchanged a few words. Then Sam turned to me and said "Bobby, this is Blue Lisa, she interviewed you for KNON radio." Bobby turned to me, took my right hand in both his hands and shook it and thanked me for the interview and for playing his music.I gave him the copy of Sam's CD, which they discussed for a bit, and then his handlers came over and said "Mr Bland, they're waiting for you." Bobby and Sam said goodbye and he was gone. The next time Bobby did a show for KNON, he specifically asked for me to interview him again, and when he called in, before I put him on air, told me "I remember you, young lady. Sam Myers introduced us. If you're OK with Sam, you're OK with me." (Thanks Sammy! Some days it's VERY good to be Blue Lisa indeed!)

What an honor to have the chance not once but twice to interview Bobby Blue Bland - a true blues legend. Sam left us almost 7 years ago (can it really be that long?!) and now Bobby's gone too. But both men made indelible impressions on this world - and their blues live on.

Hope you enjoyed that. Now, on with keeping the blues live.....

FREE EVENT THIS SATURDAY - 508 PARK: THE PAST MEETS THE FUTURE

NOTE: THIS IS A FREE EVENT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
The Fine Arts Division of the Dallas Public Library is pleased to host 508 Park: The Past Meets the Future, an exhibit and event celebrating the “resurrection” of the 1930 Art Deco building at 508 Park Avenue in Downtown Dallas. The structure, which was almost lost to posterity, has played a significant role in the city’s cultural history.
In recent years, 508 Park has become famous as one of the only two locations where Bluesman Robert Johnson (1911-38) recorded. Johnson recorded only twenty-nine songs in his brief career, in 1936 and ’37. That small repertoire, however, was powerfully influential, shaping the future work of such major pop, rock, and blues stars as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers, and Led Zeppelin.  In recognition of the site’s heritage, it was here that in 2004 Eric Clapton recorded parts of the DVD Sessions for Robert J.
However, 508 Park’s storied past goes well beyond its connection to Robert Johnson. It served as the local offices and/or distribution warehouse for divisions of the American Record Corporation and Warner Brothers Film Exchange. Available space sometimes doubled as a makeshift recording studio, not only for Johnson, but for other groundbreaking performers such as Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, the Stamps Quartet, W. Lee O'Daniel and his Hillbilly Boys, the Crystal Springs Ramblers, and the Light Crust Doughboys.
After years of intense local interest in the building, The Stewpot of First Presbyterian Church of Dallas bought the site in June 2011. Their plans to preserve and reopen the building  moving their “Open Art Studio” there and creating a Museum of Street Culture to be curated by Alan Govenar, have stirred a great deal of excitement among local music lovers.
508 Park: The Past Meets the Future allows the public a “sneak peek” at what they can expect to see in the museum when the building is reopened.  On Saturday, June 29, Alan Govenar, Pat Bywaters, and Carol Adams, the trio at the center of researching the building’ s history and envisioning the Museum, will present an overview of that  history, including some of the music that was recorded here. They will also provide a “preview of coming attractions,” highlighting plans for the building and the work in progress.
Following the presentation, the Friends of the Dallas Public Library will host a “musical reception,” giving guests the opportunity to talk with our guest speakers while hearing music from artists who recorded at 508 Park Avenue.
The program begins at 2:00 p.m., on the 4th floor of the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library (1515 Young Street). The exhibit will be open June through December. For more information, please call the Fine Arts Division: 214-670-1643.
