The Blues lost one of its most ardent supporters Saturday with the passing of Chuck Nevitt. Lots of people TALK about what they are going to do, Chuck DID things. Not a wealthy man, he never the less started Dallas Blues Society Records because he believed it important to give many unrecorded and under-recorded blues artists the chance to be heard, including Zuzu Bolin, Henry Qualls, Denny Freeman, Johnny Moeller and Big Al Dupree.
He was also a long time supporter of KNON, and of my show BIG TEXAS BLUES. The last few years Chuck had been working as a driver, so he was out on the road all the time and unable to make it out to as many live blues shows as he would have liked. But every couple of pledge drives, I'd turn around from the console and there he would be, coming in to the station to say hi and make his pledge in cash before dashing back out and hitting the road.
A man passionate about his music and his opinions, he was the real deal. He let you know just what he thought and WHY. In a world where so many shoot their mouths off but can't back it up, I respected Chuck for his honesty. Like many, I got on the wrong side of him once. But it didn't last long, and I was honored to be able to call a man so knowledgeable about and committed to the music I love a friend.
There is a really good article about him here: http://www.guidelive.com/music/2015/04/27/chuck-nevitt-dallas-blues-electric-guitar-died If you love blues music, especially Texas Blues, I strongly encourage you read it. This man deserves to be remembered for all he did for the genre.
There is a quote from Hash Brown in this article that gets (like Chuck) straight to the point: "He did it because he loved it...He
didn't do it to make money. His main aim was to put out some good
records that would stand the test of time."
That you did, Chuck Nevitt, that you did.
My blue heart is broken. Godspeed my friend.
